Stephanie Tolan the author of Surviving the Applewhites will be making a Skype visit on March 28th from 5:30-6:30pm in the Hampshire Regional High School Auditorium

Stephanie wil speak about how she came up with the idea for her book and what Applewhites is about. She will also discuss the importance of reading as a family.

The audience will have the opportunity to:
Ask the author your questions
Receive a FREE copy of Surviving the Applewhites
Participate in a community art project to engage with the text
Refreshments served!

MSLA Bookmark Contest

All students are invited to enter the Massachusetts School Library Association's Annual Bookmark Contest

Design a bookmark using this year’s theme

"I'm Wild About My School Library"

Bookmark must be designed and submitted on original MSLA form (available in the HRHS Library) and artwork must be ORIGINAL – No computer images; no characters from books, TV, movies or comics. Be sure all words are spelled correctly!

Entries must be submitted to Mrs. Belanger with a parent or guardian’s signature by February 10th.

Three winners will be chosen from the school and their designs will be sent on to the statewide contest.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three designs from students at HRHS. Winners of the statewide contest receive the following prizes:

500 printed bookmarks of the winning design
A gift certificate to a local bookstore
A framed award certificate
An invitation to the MSLA awards ceremony at the State House in March or April
A tour of the State House on the day of the awards ceremony

2011 Holiday Book Swap

This year the annual Holiday Book Swap will take place on December 22, 2011. Please bring in your swap books to Mrs. Belanger in the HRHS Library and exchange them for a swap voucher. All swap books must be in by December 21. See Mrs. Belanger for details.

Skype Visit with Laurie Halse Anderson

Wow, What an amazing event we had with Laurie! This event was made possible in part through a grant from the local Cultural Councils of Southampton, Chesterfield, Goshen, Williamsburg and Westhampton. Ms. Sullivan's English class got to interact with Laurie and asked many questions about her book, Speak, which they are now reading for class. Laurie was fabulous at relating to the students and letting them know that she thought their questions were interesting and well thought out.

Mrs. Norris will be the full-time library assistant this year

Seating areas have changed a bit so if you are unsure where you are able to sit please ask

Holiday Book Swap

Dec. 23, 2010

Students, faculty and staff are welcome to participate.
Here’s how it works...drop off your “lightly used” books for the swap in the library anytime before Dec. 23. You will receive a voucher to select books from the swap. The swap will take place before, during, and after school that day, come early for the best selection.

Participants can swap for as many books as they bring in.

This is a great no-cost way to treat someone to a book!

Any books left over at the end of the day on December 23 will be donated to charity.

Local author, Ellen Wittlinger, visited with our seventh grade students today. She did a reading from "This Means War", her newest book, and a brief exercise with the students.

The HRHS Library may look a bit different this year. We have rearranged the main area so that both study hall students and a class can take advantage of the space. The circulation desk is now closer to the door, making it easier to check books in and out. There is a new area for Juniors and Seniors and a special discussion table in the back for small classes or students to work on group projects. Please let us know how you like the changes.

Cultural Council Grant

The HRHS Library has received a grant from the Cultural Councils of Chesterfield, Goshen, Southampton, Westhampton and Williamsburg to do a visiting authors program. The program will include a visit from a local author and with a writing workshop. Funds will be available to purchase books for students that the author has written. Plans are for the event to take place in the fall.

Change is good...

Next year students will notice a few changes in the HRHS Library. We will begin to implement a new model for the space. Several high school libraries throughout the country are changing their focus; away from traditional print material to multiple format approach to learning. In the learning commons students and teachers can explore information not only from books but also online databases, ebooks, videos and podcasts. We are working towards creating a listening/reading area for students to use ipods and Kindles to access books required for their English/Language Arts classes and

The rearrangement of the space will include the creation of two new classroom areas within the library. This will allow teachers to access the library even if there are study hall students signed up. We are also rearranging the print collection so that classes can access the nonfiction information more easily and students browsing for fiction can do that without disturbing classes in the library.

Tech Week at HRHS

March 8-12 will be Tech Week at HRHS. Stop in to enter daily contests, win prizes, and learn about the role technology plays in the library. On Thursday, March 11, the library will host a Guitar Hero and Wii Tennis tournament. Sign up in the library by Tuesday, March 9th if you would like to play.

Middle School Book Groups

The seventh and eight grade book groups have been busy reading throughout the winter. They have read Rniing Through Time, Found, Cirque du Freak, Peter and the Starcatchers, Bloody Jack, The Storm in the Barn, Crash Into Me and several others.

Library Cafe

The Library Cafe will open on Friday, October 30th. Students will be able to purchase cocoa and cider during the school day for $1.00 a cup. All beverages must be consumed in the library.

Middle School Book Groups

The middle school book groups had their first meetings today during lunch. The seventh grade group has decided to read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and the eighth grade group has chosen Bloody Jack by L.A. Meyer. Seventh graders will meet during lunch on Wednesdays and eighth graders will meet during lunch on Thursdays. New members are always welcome!

The library will open on September 8th for high school students. Middle school students will be able to sign up for the library beginning on September 14th. The sign up procedure remains the same as last year: students must come to the library before the start of first period in order to sign up to use the library during their study hall periods that day. We do allow sign ups in advance and sheets are available on Fridays for the following week.

The library is open M-Th from 7:15-3:00 pm and on Fridays from 7:15-2:15. If you need to stay later please see Mrs. Belanger to make special arrangements.

We have been able to add some new material this year because of a grant from the Community Foundation. We have added People Magazine, books on producing comics and 'zines as well as many new books for recreational reading. Stop in and check things out!

End of the year schedule

Seniors must return all library material by May 15th. Any outstanding fines must be cleared by May 29th. Books are due for all other students on June 8th and the library will close for the year on June 19th. Students must pay any outstanding fines before the last day of school, June 25th.

The library cafe is closed for the year but will start up again in the fall. Because of your patronage we were able to purchase recreational reading material for the library. Thanks to all the dedicated students that staffed the cafe each week.

Seventh Grade Book Group

Tech Week Is Here!

This week the HRHS Library will be celebrating Tech Week along with hundreds of other libraries across the country. The theme for this year is "Press Play @ Your Library." We will have daily contests for students and a special gaming event on Tuesday, March 10 from 2:30-5:30 (Note the date change!). Monday is the last day to sign up for the event but anyone is welcome to come watch the fun.

Tech Week 2009

The Library Student Advisory Board is busy planning events for Tech Week, March 9-13. Plans are in the works for daily contests and information about technology.

The highlight is a gaming event that is planned for Wednesday, March 11 from 2:30-5:30. This year in addition to Guitar Hero we will have Rock Band, Wii Tennis and DDR. Sign ups will start the week of Mar. 3 and end on March 9th. More info soon...

Library Cafe is open

The HRHS Library Cafe is open every Friday during the winter. Currently we are serving hot cocoa and cider. Drinks are $1 and all proceeds go towards the purchase of new material for the library. Students are not allowed to take refreshments out of the library or have them near the computers.

All beverages must be consumed in the library and patrons are asked to clean up after themselves. Beverages will not be allowed near the computers.

Teen Read Week

This week I was able to visit all the seventh grade Language Arts classes to promote Teen Read Week. Hopefully students will go online and vote for their favorite books at: www.ala.org/teentopten

We are looking forward to an exciting year in the library. We will be open to study hall students and other visits the week of September 8. Library hours will be 7:15 to 3 p.m. on most days. Please check with Mrs Belanger if you need to work in the library after school, sometimes there are meetings or other events scheduled in the space. We have a great selection of new books and, as always the daily papers and monthly magazines.

Library orientation will be held on Wednesday and Thursday (9/10 & 9/11) for seventh graders. They will come in with their Language Arts teachers on those days. If there are other new students in the building please see Ms. Rigollaud to arrange for a brief library orientation.

School Library Month and National Library Week

The HRHS Library is partnering with local C/W Mars Public Libraries to celebrate National Library Week by offering all students and staff the opportunity to sign up for public library cards at Hampshire. We have sign-up forms for Southampton, Westhampton and Williamsburg, the three towns that currently use the C/W Mars system. This system offers card holders the ability to check their public library record online and renew books. Card holders also have the ability to order books through interlibrary loan and gain access to several online reference sources. Stop by the HRHS Library and sign up for your card today!

Tech Week is almost here!

March 3-7 is Tech Week at the Hampshire Regional High School Library. We have daily contests planned, as well as the highlight of the week, the Guitar Hero Contest. As of today we have 25 students signed up. We expect to get several more signed up between now and the actual contest. It should be a great event and there will be prizes. The format of the contest will depend upon how many students actually sign up. Be sure to check out the listing of other events that will be happening during Tech Week.

Student Advisory Board

We are currently looking for students in grades 7-12 to join our Library Student Advisory Board (SAB). The board will meet monthly in the library (with snacks!) and discuss a variety of things; from new books to planning major events or programs in the library. Participation will count towards community service hours for ninth graders and up. There is an information sheet in the library and you can talk to Mrs. Belanger or Mrs. Rigollaud about joining. This is a great way to get involved!

there was an empty blog. Hopefully it won't be empty for long though. We've created this blog for the Hampshire school community and especially for use during our upcoming program, Teen Tech Week. The program will take place the week of March 3-7. Check back for more updates on the program.

We'll use this blog to post information for students and faculty about events happening in the library. Readers can also post comments to our entries. Please remember that this is a public space and anyone has access, so DO NOT post any personal/private information.
